It is a story of ancient times, Sheshnag had a very strong son. His name was Maninag. He worshipped Lord Shiva with devotion and asked for the boon of being fearless from Garuda. Lord Shiva said- 'Okay, you can be fearless of Garuda.'
Then that serpent became fearless of Garuda and started roaming near the Ksheer Sagar where Lord Vishnu resides. Seeing his impudence, Garuda became very angry and he caught Maninaga and tied him in Garuda Paash and locked him in his house.
When Maninag did not come to see Lord Shankar for many days, Nandi said to Lord Shankar- 'O Lord! Maninag is not coming at this time, Garuda must have eaten him or tied him up. If this was not the case then why would he not come?'
Then after listening to Nandi, the God of all Gods, Lord Shiva said- 'Nandin! Maninag is tied up at Garuda's house, so you should go to Lord Vishnu immediately and offer your prayers to him. Also, on my behalf, bring the snake tied up by Garuda.'
Upon hearing the words of his master Lord Shiva, Nandi went to Lakshmipati Lord Vishnu and praised him and conveyed Lord Shankar's message to him.
Narayan Vishnu was very pleased to hear the message of Lord Shankar and the praise of Nandi. He said to Garuda - 'O Vainateya! On my request, release Maninaga from captivity and hand him over to Nandi.'
Hearing this, Garuda became angry. He became arrogant and said, 'Masters reward their servants and you are the one who wants to take away the things that I have given you. O Narayan! It is only by my strength that you conquer the demons and you yourself boast that 'I am very powerful'.
Hearing Garuda's arrogant words, Lord Vishnu laughed and said - 'King of birds! You have really become weak carrying me on your back. O best of birds! It is because of your strength that I defeat all the demons and will continue to do so. Well, you bear the weight of this little finger of mine.'
Saying this, Lord Vishnu placed his little finger on Garuda's head. As soon as he placed his finger, Garuda's head got pressed into the womb and the womb also got pressed between the legs, all his body parts got crushed.
Then he was very ashamed, downtrodden, groaning in pain and said with folded hands - 'O Jagannath! Please protect me, your guilty servant. Lord! You are the one who holds all the worlds. O son-loving! O mother of the world! Please protect me, your poor and miserable child.' Saying this, Garuda prayed to God.
Seeing this, compassionate Goddess Lakshmi prayed to Lord Janardan, 'Lord! Garuda is your servant, forgive his crime and protect him.'
Seeing Garuda humble and devoid of ego, God also said, 'Garuda! Now you go to Lord Shankar. You will be able to recover only by the grace of Lord Shankar.'
Garuda accepted the Lord's command and left with Nandi and Maninag at a slow pace to see Lord Shankar without any pride. His pride had vanished. After seeing Lord Shankar and taking a bath in Gautami Ganga as per his advice, he again became as fast as a thunderbolt and had a strong body.
