Understanding Gotra: Lineage, Varna, and Cultural Significance

Gotra has broad term but generally it refers to lineage of seven or eight Rishi. According to Brihadranyaka upnishad , The sons of saptarshi, ( kashyap, Atri, Vashishtha, Vishvamitra, Gautam, Jamdagani, Bharadvaja,) and the sons of 1 another maharshi Jambu (the descendant of kashyapa) are considered to be gotra.

Later, According to business they were classified into four category

  1. Brahmin 2. Kshatriya 3. Vaishya 4. Sudra

After that with time work related category become birth related that is the reason behind person with same gotra could exist in every varna.

One use of gotra is for marriage, marriage between same gotra is considered to incest.
