According to Mahabharata, Duryodhana was an asura named Kali in his previous birth. He prayed to Lord Shiva that in his next birth his body should be strong and he should not be killed by Narayan. However, due to the curse of Goddess Parvati, Duryodhana's body became weak below the hip.

Duryodhana is considered to be the incarnation of Kalyug. It is said that Duryodhana had all the qualities that the humans of Kalyug should have. Duryodhana was devious, cruel and was also an expert in mace fighting.
